Chinese Energy Plans Could Trim World Oil Demand, Goldman Says

China’s newly-announced plans to clean up its economy are driving a rethink of the world’s future oil consumption. In a research note Friday, Goldman Sache says China’s new energy plans could conceivably cut the country’s oil consumption by 15 million barrels a day over the next 40 years—if China makes signficant improvements in energy efficiency and boosts its use of alternative energy. As goes China , so goes the world: If those energy-intensity plans work out, Goldman says global oil consumption would be 20% lower over the next 40 years compared with Goldman’s previous forecast.
