Winter wasn’t very hard this year, well at least so far, and even if it gets more normal winter like, there’s not much time left. Our bees have done well, and it looks like it might be a great summer ahead. New research shows that minute doses of widely used pesticide can leave bees vulnerable to infection. We’re gearing up for spring on our southwest Virginia farm, planning the garden, pruning the perennials, and getting ready to raise bees, broilers, and mushrooms. You don’t have to depend on nature to feed your bees. Take matters into your own hands and plant enough good food for your bees, so they have good, safe food all year long. Neonicotinoid insecticides have long been suspected of causing bee deaths. A new study adds weight to those claims. Ordering bees in January doesn’t seem to make sense, until you understand that April is the cruelest month. Plus, if you order bees in January, and then you don’t need them – that’s just a reason to celebrate! Order early! Bees may do better in cities than in the country. Now stores are cropping up to serve the urban beekeeper. An urban beekeeping store may seem like a San Francisco oddity. But as city bees thrive, these stores may become a normal sight. |
