First 100 Days Of Trump: A Disaster For The Environment And Our Families’ Health

Donald Trump has been president for 100 days as of Saturday April 29th. During that time he has done virtually nothing to improve the quality of our environment and instead he has taken numerous actions to put this country’s air, water, land and our families’ health in harm’s way. Perhaps the most glaring example of his indifference to our planet’s future is the path Trump has chosen to take when it comes to dealing with global warming. We’re quickly approaching the point at which scientists say we won’t be able to stave off the most disastrous impacts of global warming, as rising sea levels, more powerful storms, droughts and other extreme weather events become more disruptive. Failing to act on climate also means failing to stand up for our families’ health. Global warming pollution is extending the smog season and putting our health at risk. In 2015, 72 U.S. cities each experienced 100 days with elevated smog levels as documented in Environment America’s ‘Our Health is at Risk’ report. Smog pollution causes health impacts such as coughing and throat irritation as well as asthma and permanent damage to lung tissue […]

SoCal Business Leaders Send Open Letter To EPA Chief Warning Against Rollback Of Environmental Regulations

Today the Los Angeles Business Council sent an urgent warning to Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt that recent efforts to rollback climate change policies, including the Energy Star program, will damage our economy, slow job growth, and put the environment at risk. The letter was sent on behalf of the LABC’s 450 members who represent a cross-section of sectors including utilities, healthcare, real estate and finance. The full text of the letter is below: Dear Administrator Pruitt, On behalf of the Los Angeles Business Council, which represents over 450 influential businesses across virtually every industry, we urge you to stop the rollback of key environmental regulations. As business leaders, we have a unique perspective on how environmental regulations have not only improved our citizens’ quality of life, but significantly grown our local economy. We share the sentiment of the recently sent letter to President Trump by the Mayors National Climate Action Agenda, co-founded by Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, opposing recent actions to roll back the Clean Power Plan, reduce vehicle fuel efficiency standards, and propose budget cuts to the EPA and critical programs such as Energy Star. There is overwhelming evidence showing that investment in clean energy and other environmentally-friendly initiatives spur job growth: Over 500,000 Californians are now employed by the clean energy industry, where wages are higher than average, and well-paying, entry-level blue collar jobs are a reality. Overall, renewable energy has the potential to be cleaner, safer, and more cost-efficient than traditional fossil fuels. As a group devoted to promoting business interests in the Los Angeles region, we respectfully request that you do not overlook the economic benefits of policies that incentivize renewable energy use and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. These impacts reverberate across many industries: they reduce costs in the long-term, encourage research and development in job-producing industries, and save millions in public health costs. We are especially concerned about the rollback of the Energy Star program. […]

Trump’s Energy And Climate Policy: Denial And Delusion

The Times is now publishing climate denial. Scientists are not having it.

Two weeks ago, the New York Times took on Bret Stephens — who once called climate change an “imaginary” problem — as an op-ed columnist in an effort to reflect more political perspectives.

His first column came out on Friday, and — surprise — it casts doubt on the certainty of the scientific consensus on climate.

Previously, while some readers had threatened to cancel their subscriptions as a result of his controversial stances on science, Muslims, and campus rape, “relatively few” had done so, wrote Liz Spayd, the Times’ public editor.

The backlash to Spayd’s piece was real. Climatologist Michael Mann canceled his subscription and started the Twitter hashtag #ShowYourCancellation.

“There is no left-leaning or right-leaning climate science, just as there is no Democrat or Republican theory of gravity,” wrote Stefan Rahmstorf, head of Earth System Analysis at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, in his cancellation letter.

Other scientists joined in:

James Bennet, the paper’s editorial page editor, defended the decision to hire Stephens. We shouldn’t ignore the perspective of the “millions of people who agree with him,” he told HuffPost.

Well, yes — but millions of people have been wrong before. That doesn’t mean alternative facts should be given a platform.

Now that Stephens’ first piece is up, we’ll see if more cancellations follow.
