Google’s Earth Day Doodle Sends an Urgent Message About Climate Change

Google’s doodle for Earth Day sends a pertinent message about climate change as scientists and others gear up for the March for Science on Saturday. In a series of illustrations, the Google doodle tells the story of a sleeping fox that has a nightmare about the consequences of climate change, featuring melted icebergs and dead plants. Disturbed, the fox enlists two friends to be more thoughtful about conservation—the trio eat vegetables, grow plants, ride bikes and use solar energy. Google also offered conservation tips for Earth Day, reminding people to turn off lights, plant trees, eat locally sourced food and avoid driving. […]

Climate Change This Week: Looming Health Disaster, Clean Power Kites, and More!

Today, the Earth got a little hotter, and a little more crowded. Saving BUB, Beautiful Unique Biodiversity, as in this asian pangolin, is another reason to preserve carbon storing forests. Pangolins everywhere are endangered. These prehistoric creatures are being vigorously hunted due to false rumors of their scales’ healing powers. Source www.edgeofexistence.org OO Warning To Forest Destroyers: This Scientist Will Catch You With his satellites that spot deforestation as it happens. Forests: the cheapest way to store carbon A Rarity That Could Soon Disappear Forever – the Saola of the mountain forests of Vietnam and Laos is extremely rare and unique, and was discovered from a skull found in a hunter’s home […]

Perovskite Solar Cell: Key To A Brighter Solar Future?

The use of solar energy is expanding worldwide but the efficiency of silicon solar cells has made very little progress in the last few decades. Could perovskite solar cell be the answer to high-efficiency solar power? Conventional solar cells today are made of silicon with power conversion efficiencies that have been stagnating in the low-20% range for about 15 years. This might strike you as bizarre, since glancing at data from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) reveals theoretical efficiencies that approach 50%. Reported timeline of solar cell energy conversion efficiencies since 1976 from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory Solar efficiency refers to what portion of sunlight energy is converted to electricity via the use of photovoltaic technology. So why are we still using what might appear to be dinosaur technology when it comes to relying on low-efficiency silicon solar cells? As usual, a gap is present between application (in the context of the real world) and theory (think idealistic sterile laboratory conditions). […]
