Sports of The Times: As Trump Takes On Athletes, Watch Them Rise

This is a barely recognizable president. It also is a barely recognizable generation of pro athletes. Thank God for the latter.PhotoStephen Curry at the Golden State Warriors’ practice on Saturday. Curry, whose team won the N.B.A. championship in June, explained why he thought the team should skip the champions’ customary visit to the White House. A day later, President Trump posted on Twitter that Curry was not invited.Credit Andrew Burton for The New York TimesJust as the president lays his hand on the third rail of race, the athletes are responding. The N.B.A. […]

Stephen Curry, on a ‘Surreal Day,’ Confronts a Presidential Snub

As a player and as a coach, Kerr has visited the White House on several occasions. And despite his well-publicized criticism of the current administration, Kerr said in June that he was open to the idea of the Warriors’ visiting the White House as something of a unifying gesture.“I think we would, in normal times, easily be able to set aside political views, and go visit and have a great time,” Kerr said Saturday. “But these are not ordinary times. Probably the most divisive times in my life, I guess, since Vietnam, when I was just a kid.”He added, “The president made it really, really difficult for us to honor that institution.”On Friday, at the team’s annual media day ahead of the start of training camp, Curry said that the Warriors had not decided as a team whether they would visit the White House and that they planned to talk about it at a meeting. But Curry said that if it were up to him, he would not go. That seemed to be the consensus among the players.Newsletter Sign UpContinue reading the main storyThank you for subscribing. An error has occurred. […]

News Analysis: Yes, Aaron Hernandez Suffered Brain Injury. But That May Not Explain His Violence.

Yet drawing a direct line from those basic findings to what people do out in the world is dicey, given the ineffable interplay between circumstance, relationships and personality. What scientists — from such diverse fields as psychiatry, neurology and substance use — can say is that the arrows seem to be pointing in the same direction. A number of brain states raise the risk of acting out violently, and the evidence so far, while incomplete, suggests that C.T.E. may be one of them.PhotoFormer New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez during his arraignment in Boston in 2014. While the damage to the brain of Mr. Hernandez was extensive, the science linking chronic traumatic encephalopathy and violent behavior is still murky.Credit Pool photo by Dominick ReuterDr. Samuel Gandy, director of the N.F.L. neurology program at Mount Sinai Medical Center, said that rage and irritability “are far and away the most prominent symptoms” among former players with likely C.T.E., in his research. Trump Blasts Warriors’ Curry. LeBron James’s Retort: ‘U Bum.’

But Mr. Trump’s broadsides this time focused on some of the most prominent African-American athletes in the country, who have international followings and have called out the president for his lack of tolerance and divisive views on race.On Friday night, Mr. Trump said: “Wouldn’t you love to see one of these N.F.L. owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, ‘Get that son of a bitch off the field right now, out, he’s fired,’ ” the president said at the rally, for Senator Luther Strange, who was appointed to the Senate this year and is facing Roy Moore in a Republican primary runoff. He said the protests would stop if fans left games when players did not stand for the anthem. Hurricane Maria Live Updates: Structural Damage at Guajataca Dam Prompts Evacuations in Puerto Rico

“Its been hard to see infrastructure deteriorate in Puerto Rico,” he said, “but it has been harder to meet citizens who have lost it all.”Continue reading the main storyAccording to the United States Army Corps of Engineers, Guajataca Dam is an earthen structure, 120 feet high and nearly 1,000 feet long. It was built in the mid-1920s by the Army Corps of Engineers, but is now owned by the power authority. It lies across the Guajataca River, forming a reservoir that can hold about 11 billion gallons of water that is used for drinking, irrigation and power generation.Sign up for the Morning Briefing for hurricane news and a daily look at what you need to know to begin your day. See how the storm traveled across Puerto Rico, and here is a guide on how to help victims.Aid is being sent to Puerto Rico.Officials in Puerto Rico were corralling incoming aid as rescue and recovery efforts continued after the storm, Mr. Rosselló said on MSNBC on Friday.“There’s still some rain and, of course, the soils are saturated, so it’s still not safe to go outside,” he said. “We’re still on emergency protocol and our main objective right now is making sure people are safe.”PhotoResidents lined up on Friday, seeking water from a spring in an area hit by Hurricane Maria in Cayey, P.R.Credit Carlos Garcia Rawlins/ReutersMr. Rosselló said that the island was getting generators, mattresses, food and water from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and from others in the private sector.Officials have established a logistics center, which will receive all incoming aid and then distribute it to 12 zones throughout the island, he said.“The people of Puerto Rico are really being tremendous under these circumstances,” he said. Some elderly residents had been found in rural areas without food and necessary medication, Carmen Yulín Cruz, the mayor of San Juan, said on CNN on Friday.Newsletter Sign UpContinue reading the main storyThank you for subscribing. An error has occurred. Facing Months in the Dark, Ordinary Life in Puerto Rico is ‘Beyond Reach’

“People will start going nuts pretty soon,” said Miguel A. Soto-Class, president of the Center for a New Economy, a nonpartisan research organization. “I don’t think it will be ‘Mad Max,’ but people will be looking for diesel and gasoline, more than water even.”The water supply was also becoming a problem. Even in San Juan, people need electricity to access water, and water is also critical to running some air-conditioning systems. At Centro Medico, a major hospital outside San Juan in Río Piedras, the emergency unit was treating patients but had no air-conditioning, said Dr. Johnny Rullán, a physician. But the biggest long-term obstacle was the prospect of months without power.Puerto Ricans are the first to say they can improvise — resolver — when a drought dries them up or a terrible storm knocks them down. Prospect of Atmospheric Nuclear Test by North Korea Raises Specter of Danger

“It is not clear North Korea has that capability yet,’’ said Siegfried S. Hecker, the former director of Los Alamos National Laboratory and the nuclear weapons expert the North Koreans let in to see their uranium enrichment plants years ago, when they wanted to make clear to the Obama administration that their atomic weapons program was moving ahead, unimpeded by sanctions.“Besides,” said Dr. Hecker, now a professor at Stanford University, “a live missile test — one loaded with an H-bomb — poses enormous risk.” He recalled that when the United States performed such tests in the early days of the Cold War, “one blew up on the launchpad and one had to be destroyed right after launch, creating significant radioactive contamination.”The North Koreans have studied this history, too, according to current and former American intelligence officials. But the appeal of an atmospheric test is obvious: It would create a sense of fear that an explosion deep inside a tunnel in North Korea does not. The underground tests are detected on a Richter scale; an atmospheric test, like the kind the United States conducted at Bikini Atoll starting in 1948, creates a terrifying mushroom cloud.Continue reading the main storyThe largest of those, a 1954 test code-named Castle Bravo, turned out to be roughly three times larger than American bomb designers anticipated […]
