Put Your Feet Where Your Values Are: March For Science

Take out your mobile phone and give it a good look. Curiosity made that. Curiosity coupled with intense concentration, wild imagination, bold hypotheses, and years of experimental toil to validate them. The slim device in your hand encapsulates 500 years of physics. Newtonian mechanics, James Clerk Maxwell’s equations for electromagnetism, Einstein’s relativity, Bohr’s atomic theory, Turing’s universal computer, Schrödinger’s quantum wave function, Feynman’s diagram: all these and more streamed into the phone you hold in your hand. And that’s just one branch of science […]

In Europe, A Solidarity March For Science — And A Call To Action In Political Debates

Luc Soete, United Nations University On Earth Day, Saturday April 22 2017, scientists will descend from their ivory towers in more than 500 cities across the globe to stage a huge March for Science. The scientists are coming out en masse to champion “robustly funded and publicly communicated science as a pillar of human freedom and prosperity”. The movement started early this year after Donald Trump’s science-and-technology-free inauguration speech and his controversial decisions to remove from the White House website all climate change related material, forbid researchers at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to speak to the press and introduce visa restrictions on citizens from a number of Muslim-majority countries. In Europe, where I sit, silenced scientists is not really an issue. The values of science – the search for the truth, and the need for openness and transparency in research – are broadly supported within the EU. […]

Defending Earth Every Day With Women Around The World

This Saturday, April 22, the world will mark Earth Day. Women and men in Washington, D.C., throughout the U.S., and around the world will take to the streets to “March for Science,” in recognition of climate science and the critical importance of governments upholding commitments to global environmental protection efforts and climate change accords. It’s an important moment to rally as leaders’ denial of climate change and science in the U.S. carries devastating implications for all of us.For women around the world, every day is Earth Day. They are fearlessly working to defend their lands. They are climate justice warriors, on the frontlines fighting for clean water, equal land rights for women, and protecting indigenous lands. In my years working with women and girls and learning from their experiences in their own communities, I know that for many women, land is intensely personal. Land is full of possibility, and it holds years of rich history.Land rights are a very personal thing: they’re often passed down by generations, most often from fathers to their sons […]

The Climate Post: EPA Administrator Says United States Should Exit Paris Agreement

In an interview last week, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator (EPA) Scott Pruitt said that the United States should “exit” the Paris Agreement—the first time such a high-ranking Trump administration official has so explicitly rejected the global accord to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit that increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Pruitt also vowed that the EPA would “roll back” the Clean Power Plan, a key component of former Obama administration’s plan to meet the U.S. pledge under the Paris Agreement, which calls for an emissions reduction of 26–28 percent from 2005 levels by 2025. […]

Trump And Pruitt Attack EPA Clean Water Standard

If you like to swim, fish, or drink water, listen up. The Trump administration is coming for your clean water. Just a few days ago, Trump’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) took a first step toward trying to roll back standards for our biggest source of toxic water pollution: coal-fired power plants. This is the latest installment in EPA administrator and fossil fuel BFF Scott Pruitt’s “Back to Pollution” agenda, and it might be coming to the tap water near you. As our friend Pete Harrison at Waterkeeper Alliance put it, “This rollback gives a blank check to the power companies, and it directly threatens drinking water supplies across the country.” Coal-fired power plants are our biggest source of toxic water pollution, as they discharge very nasty and dangerous chemicals like lead, arsenic, and cadmium that are linked to a host of serious health problems. But the federal standards for that pollution were almost nonexistent and 30 years out of date, thanks to the political clout of the coal industry. A court ordered EPA to act, and the agency finalized updated standards in 2015, which went into effect in January 2016 […]

Who Will Protect The Air We Breathe And Water We Drink? The Resistance

By Rich StolzMore and more Americans are coming to the conclusion that climate change is no myth at a time when the Trump administration is intent on ignoring reality and appeasing corporate interests. Some environmental leaders are responding by formulating a lowest common denominator strategy on climate, like revenue neutral approaches, hoping to magically create a middle ground by bowing to the altar of limited government. Fortunately, an inclusive, inter-sectional and organic resistance is rising. This spring, throughout a week of powerful demonstrations from Earth Day to May Day, this resistance will blossom.OneAmerica is a multi-issue immigrant rights organization that calls Washington state – aka the Center of the Resistance – home. Our communities are as harmed in the short term by ICE raids and unconstitutional travel bans as they are in the long term by gutted environmental regulations. To fight these destructive and unpopular attacks, we need everyone, but more importantly, we need to follow the leadership of those most impacted by these regulatory rollbacks and programmatic cuts.People across the country overwhelmingly support action on climate and investment in renewable energy sources, and believe immigrants make the United States a better place to live. In partnership with our allies among labor, environmental, faith, and progressive business groups, OneAmerica has worked with other organizations led by people of color to build a statewide movement for action on climate change that puts our communities and other front line communities first. Our communities, to quote environmental justice advocate Majora Carter, are the canaries in the coal mine: We have already begun to experience climate disruption by virtue of where we live and work, and we have always been on the front lines of pollution […]
