Contributing Op-Ed Writer: Famous Athletes Have Always Led the Way

All of this seems foreign to people who didn’t — and don’t — depend on their sports stars or their entertainers to double as part-time spokesmen and spokeswomen for their race. Taylor Swift carries no such burden; Bryce Harper curries no such expectation. Sure, Joe DiMaggio made the Italians proud, and Jews exulted in the play of Hank Greenberg and Sandy Koufax. But despite the undeniable prejudice some of them confronted, none truly faced the feisty assortment of bigotries that dogged the black athlete’s path. Muhammad Ali spoke against the war in Vietnam, often linking it to domestic racial terror, and he paid for his dissent, cast as a villain, a racial pariah, a traitor, a coward, a clueless and unpatriotic dupe. Ali died a hero decades later, but by then his transformation was aided by a disease that diminished his speech […]

Kelly, in Defending Trump Call, Holds Up Military as an Elite Class

Although he has rarely spoken about his son’s death publicly, Mr. Kelly told reporters on Thursday what happened when his friend Gen. Joseph F. Dunford Jr., now the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff but in late 2010 was the assistant commandant of the Marine Corps, broke the news to Mr. Kelly of his son’s death.PhotoA mother and son mourning at Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day this year.Credit Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images“He said, ‘Kel, he was doing exactly what he wanted to do when he was killed,’” Mr. Kelly recalled. “He knew what he was getting into by joining that 1 percent. He knew what the possibilities were because we’re at war.”Mr. Kelly used General Dunford’s words to try to explain why Mr […]

Trump’s Tough Talk on Nafta Suggests Pact’s Demise Is Imminent

The collapse of the 1994 trade deal would reverberate throughout the global economy, inflicting damage far beyond Mexico, Canada and the United States and affecting industries as varied as manufacturing, agriculture and energy. It would also sow at least short-term chaos for businesses, like the auto industry, which have arranged their North American supply chains around the deal’s terms. The ripple effects could also impede other aspects of the president’s agenda, for example, by solidifying political opposition among farm state Republicans who support the pact and jeopardizing legislative priorities like tax reform. And it could have far-reaching political effects, including the Mexican general election in July 2018 and Mr. Trump’s own re-election campaign.PhotoPrime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada met Wednesday with members of the House Ways and Means Committee about the Nafta negotiations on Capitol Hill in Washington.Credit Saul Loeb/Agence France-Presse — Getty ImagesBusiness leaders have become spooked by the increasing odds of the trade deal’s demise, and on Monday, more than 310 state and local chambers of commerce sent a letter to the administration urging the United States to remain in Nafta. Speaking in Mexico on Tuesday, the president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Thomas J. Donohue, said the negotiations had “reached a critical moment. And the chamber has had no choice but ring the alarm bells.”“Let me be forceful and direct,” he said. […]

Supreme Court Cancels Hearing on Previous Trump Travel Ban

Critics say Travel Ban 3.0 is still little more than a dressed-up Muslim ban. And despite a less chaotic rollout, questions remain about how the travel ban will be put in place, who will be affected, how the countries were picked and whether it will work to prevent terrorist attacks. Here are answers to some of those questions:Why did Trump ban travel from these countries? The Department of Homeland Security said the countries covered under the presidential proclamation were chosen because they could not properly establish the identity of people seeking to travel from those countries to the United States. Officials said the countries on the list did not share information about whether potential travelers have a criminal history or connections to terrorism. And some of the countries are known to be potential terrorist safe havens.Administration officials said countries on the banned-travel list failed to meet what they called “objective criteria.” They will be subject to the travel ban until they can demonstrate their ability to deliver the information requested by the United States, officials said. Will this prevent a terrorist attack? While counterterrorism experts say improvements to the government’s vetting capabilities are necessary, they say the new restrictions may be far too broad because they focus on countries and not individuals. An internal report written by intelligence analysts at the Department of Homeland Security in February found that “country of citizenship is unlikely to be a reliable indicator of potential terrorist activity.”Moreover, the Cato Institute found that since 1975, no Americans have been killed on American soil by foreign-born terrorists who come from any of the countries on the new executive order: Iran, Libya, Syria, Yemen, Somalia, Chad, North Korea, Iraq and Venezuela. The New America Foundation found that since the Sept. 11 attacks, 95 Americans had been killed by terrorists inside the United States. […]
