FDA Resumes Testing Foods For Weed Killer, Safety Questions Grow

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has resumed its first-ever endeavor to evaluate how much of a controversial chemical is making its way into the U.S. food supply. And the tests can’t come soon enough as safety concerns about the herbicide known as glyphosate grow. The FDA, the nation’s chief food safety regulator, launched what it calls a “special assignment” last year to analyze certain foods for glyphosate residues after the agency was criticized by the U.S […]

Climate Change Is Literally Making You Lose Sleep

Climate change caused by human emissions of greenhouse gases is wreaking havoc on our planet — from heat waves to heavy rainstorms to higher sea levels, the consequences of global warming are far-reaching. The mere thought of the irreversible damage being done to our planet is enough to leave us tossing and turning at night. But as it turns out, there’s a scientific reason that climate change is literally making us lose sleep. Many of us have had the experience of struggling to fall and stay asleep during a heat wave — especially if we don’t have air conditioning. A newly published paper in the journal Science Advances predicts that as global temperatures continue to rise an increasing number of people will lose sleep. This side effect of climate change will disproportionately affect certain demographics — specifically, people who can’t afford to run their air conditioning all night, and the elderly, who have a harder time regulating their body temperature.According to the researchers’ calculations, an extra six nights of sleeplessness can be expected every month for every 100 Americans by 2050. That number will surge to 14 nights per month by 2099 if global emissions continue at their current level. Sleep deprivation is miserable, but it’s more than a mere inconvenience.Sleep deprivation is miserable, but it’s more than a mere inconvenience […]

This Paint Could Change The Face Of Sustainable Design

For Architectural Digest, by Carrie Hojnicki. Graphene, and its somewhat mythical categorization as one of the strongest materials in the world, has long been the stuff of sustainable design dreams. Thanks to Spanish producer Graphenstone, these dreams are becoming a reality with the introduction of the world’s first Graphene paint. Thanks to Spanish producer Graphenstone, these dreams are becoming a reality with the introduction of the world’s first Graphene paint. First reported by Dezeen, who spoke with Graphene director Patrick Folkes, the introduction of Graphene paint, which has already been used successfully? on several commercial and restoration projects in Europe, will have enormous implications for energy-saving in the heating and cooling of homes because it effectively acts as a source of sustainable heat energy. “When used on interior wall surfaces, rather than heat being radiated through the walls, the graphene within the paint captures the heat,” Folkes explained to Dezeen. “It then conducts the heat through the paint and across the whole Graphenstone-painted surface of interior walls. This enhances the insulation measures used in buildings by slowing heat conduction through walls and out of buildings.” As if that weren’t enough for the eco-friendly consumer, the new paint will also be composed of 98 percent pure lime — a resource endemic to Graphenstone’s Spanish roots — whose ability to absorb carbon dioxide can purify ambient air. The paint, distributed through the Graphene Company, is available in indoor and outdoor varieties […]

Scott Pruitt’s Big Coal Lie

EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt told a whopper of a lie on Meet the Press, claiming that the coal industry has grown by 50,000 jobs since Trump became president. Here is NBC’s transcript of the exchange between Chuck Todd and Pruitt, after showing a clip from Al Gore (watch the video at the 5:00 minute mark, here): AL GORE: The loss of jobs in the coal industry started with the mechanization of the coal industry. Natural gas started displacing coal and the fossil fuel sector. And promising to re-create the 19th century is not a visionary strategy for a successful 21st century. (END TAPE) CHUCK TODD: Is he right that you guys are making a false promise though to some of these fossil fuel industries? EPA ADMINISTRATOR SCOTT PRUITT: Dead wrong. Because the numbers show exactly the opposite in fact since the fourth quarter of last year to most recently added almost 50,000 jobs in the coal sector. In the month of May alone, almost 7,000 jobs. Fact Check: Four Smokestacks (Wrong, Deliberate and Dangerous) There is no question that Pruitt’s claim is wrong. Was it deliberate? […]

Climate Change Is The Real Job Killer, Not The Paris Climate Agreement

With the withdrawal of the United States from the Paris Climate Agreement, President Donald Trump has put the United States on the wrong side of history. The United States now joins only two other nations, Syria and Nicaragua, in standing on the sidelines in the fight against climate change. While this decision may further tarnish the reputation of the United States on the world stage, it can’t stop the inevitable transition to the low carbon global economy of the future. As a CEO, I often to have to make decisions that meet the short term needs of my business without undermining our long term competitiveness. I’ve made capital investments in our St. […]

Trump’s Withdrawal From The Paris Agreement Actually Does Us A Favor

Donald Trump has done what Al Gore, Jim Hansen, climate scientists, the Sierra Club and the rest of the environmental movement could never do – make climate disruption breaking cable TV news. Trump’s histrionic, largely symbolic and recklessly self-destructive decision to abandon the Paris Climate Agreement means, among other things, that far more Americans know about the Paris Climate agreement this morning than 24 hours ago. Never has climate dominated a news cycle as it did yesterday – even when the Paris Agreement was signed by all of the world, (Nicaragua and Syria excepted). Trump did this by providing the climate crisis with what it lacked – a single villain. He has now cast himself, for most of the global community, as a James Bond style villain, a Dr. No or Goldfinger, plotting global destruction for personal power and gain. But he is, in reality, President of the United States – not a character in a movie. […]
