Jam the courts, blow the whistles, shut down the kitchen: Here are The Resistance’s latest strategies

In the aftermath of America’s Most Baffling Press Conference, let’s cut to the chase: People are calling out Trump and his administration in meaningful, productive ways all across the land. Here’s what went down:

Despite unprecedented calls from EPA employees for senators to block his confirmation and a judge’s order to release years of emails with fossil fuel industry figures, Scott Pruitt is now EPA administrator. Are you enraged? Will you be in Boston this weekend? That’s something else to be upset about, but bear with us: Thousands of scientists are in town for the American Association for the Advancement of Science annual conference. On Feb. 19, scientists and their allies will hold a rally in Copley Square to protest the Trump administration’s anti-science rhetoric and policies.

If you’re trying to reach anyone in the Department of Energy, you might have a tough time of it, because their phone directory was taken offline on Thursday morning. Cool! Anyway, California Rep. Ted Lieu and Virginia Rep. Don Beyer have published a guide for whistleblowers as a show of strength against the Trump administration’s “strapp[ing] a muzzle on federal agencies.” The Union of Concerned Scientists also released a guide to help scientists bring important information to the public discreetly and securely. Environmental science and public health shouldn’t be political, and these guides are a means to protect them.

Earthjustice filed a lawsuit on behalf of the Standing Rock Sioux in a new attempt to block construction on the Dakota Access Pipeline, which is already underway. A bit of good news for the anti-pipeline movement: The hearing may be expedited.

On Feb. 16, the American food industry may have looked a little … thin. That’s because immigrants across the United States took the day off to show what an America that operates on deportations and immigration bans would look like. (Spoiler: It doesn’t have a lot of food.) In case you were wondering if Washington would notice (via The New York Times): “The Pentagon warned its employees that a number of its food concessions, including Sbarro’s [sic], Starbucks, and Taco Bell, were closed because immigrant employees had stayed home and that they could expect longer lines at restaurants that were open.”

And in response to an ongoing rash of deportations, a coalition of Mexican lawmakers under the name Monarca is aiming to protect Mexican immigrants by exploiting the U.S. legal system’s greatest weakness: It’s a bureaucratic nightmare that’s already heavily backlogged!

And, ICYMI on Grist:

The movement to divest from Dakota Access is growing fast. Big name Republicans are taking a carbon tax plan to the White House. […]

U.S. Climate Envoy Jonathan Pershing: Five Feet Of Sea Level Rise By 2050 Possible

The mood in Marrakech was somber when top climate envoy for President Barack Obama Jonathan Pershing dropped a bombshell on observers gathered there: The rapid warming in polar regions the world is now witnessing may result in five feet–or 1.5 meters– of sea level rise by 2050. Pershing had met earlier with State Department Secretary John Kerry in Morocco at the 22nd UN Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, or COP22. Kerry had just returned from a trip to Antarctica. According to Pershing, Kerry told him that the Pine Island Glacier in Antarctica “is moving very fast and when it goes, we will see 1.5 meters of sea level rise by 2050.” “Five feet of sea level rise in less than 35 years — that is really soon,” said Pershing. “There are 65 million people now living in a state of conflict and 140 million who live less than 3 feet above sea level. Extrapolate to an amount two or three times the level of conflict we have now, and you see that this is a huge crisis. If we are lucky, we will have fewer people displaced, but I’m not optimistic that small island states can be saved.” As if on cue, reports began to emerge in scientific circles that Antarctica’s thawing was proceeding at a record pace, while Arctic temperatures were at a crazy 36 degrees Fahrenheit above normal. While the velocity around sea level rise seems to be accelerating, momentum around the Paris Agreement is also growing, with the United Kingdom joining 110 other countries in ratifying the agreement […]

At COP22 In Morocco, Secretary Of State John Kerry Affirms U.S. Commitment To Address Climate Change

Secretary of State John Kerry reaffirmed the US commitment to addressing global climate change here at the UN climate conference in Marrakech, Morocco. Marrakech serves as host city for the 22nd Conference of Parties (COP22) under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The world must now wait to see if the incoming Trump administration will honor those commitments, or if the US will become a rogue nation that denies the very existence of climate change as a hoax “created by and for the Chinese to make US manufacturing less competitive.” Once inaugurated, Trump will stand as THE ONLY head-of-state who denies the science of climate change. Kerry stated, “No one should doubt the overwhelming majority of Americans who know climate change is occurring and are committed to addressing it.” He noted how “The world is unified” and moved so quickly to bring the Paris Agreement into force. “The US is on our way to meeting all of our climate commitments.” Kerry emphasized that the primary driver of emissions reduction is market place forces. “Investing in clean energy simply makes economic sense…[clean energy] is a multi-trillion dollar market, the largest the world has ever known.” [Secretary of State John Kerry press briefing at COP22 in Marrakech, Morocco.] Kerry acknowledged, “Time is not our side.” Morocco hosted COP7 in 2001. “Since then, we have experienced our 16 hottest years in history…Even the strongest skeptic has to acknowledge that something is happening.” Kerry stated, “I underscore today, we don’t get a second chance.” Science warns “some thresholds, if we cross them, cannot be reversed…Wise public policy demands that we take [informed action] now…This is about choices.” Yesterday, King Mohammad VI welcomed dignitaries to the COP22 High-Level Segment in Morocco, “the land of dialog and coexistence, the crossroads of civilizations.” Marrakech is a gritty, bustling commercial hub nestled on a plateau surrounded by the snow-capped Atlas Mountains. While the city basks under clear, blue, sunny skies, negotiators and attendees at the nearby COP labor under a dark cloud of uncertainty due to the outcome of the recent US presidential elections. During the run-up to the election, Trump proclaimed that he would withdraw from the Paris Agreement on day-one of his presidency. The historic Paris Agreement turned our global economic ship away from fossil fuels and toward a low carbon future last December when 196 Parties to the UNFCCC approved The Agreement at COP21 in Paris.
