The Good News For The Dogs In Yulin, China

For the past seven years, the Chinese city of Yulin has celebrated the Yulin Dog Meat Festival, created by the city’s dog meat traders out of sheer profit motives. The animals were trucked in from all over the country, confined to small cages, brutally slaughtered, often in front of other dogs waiting for their turn and before terrified young children. This isn’t a centuries-old tradition, as the dog meat traders have falsely claimed […]

Community Choice Energy Will Help San Jose Chart A More Sustainable Future

All too often, calls for environmental sustainability resemble a doctor’s prescription, urging that we indulge less, sweat more, and take bad-tasting medicine. Fortunately, life sometimes gives us happier options. On May 16, the San Jose City Council voted to establish a Community Choice Energy (CCE) program, which will enable our residents and businesses to choose the source of their electricity. By becoming the largest U.S. city to do so, we will save consumers money, boost our renewable energy supply, and invest in energy efficiency projects. For decades, San Jose consumers have purchased their electricity from an investor-owned utility, Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E). CCE programs offer our residents a choice, by providing an alternative source of wholesale energy purchases, while PG&E continues distributing the electricity through its own power lines, and handling all billing. Residents can then choose to purchase their electricity from the local CCE, or “opt out” to PG&E, after comparing rates, environmental benefits, rebates, and other criteria. […]

Responding To Drought Must Be Sustainable, Not Piecemeal

A malnutrition emergency Food security in Kenya has deteriorated significantly since the end of 2016. UNICEF reports a significant increase in severe acute malnutrition. Nearly 110,000 children under-five need treatment, up from 75,300 in August 2016. Waterholes and rivers have dried up, leading to widespread crop failure and livestock depletion. At the height of the drought, surface water in most counties had either dried up or its level dramatically reduced. Consequently, within a year, the price of maize flour has risen by 31 per cent, milk by 12 and sugar by 21 per cent. These food price increases have driven inflation up from 9.04 per cent in February to 11.48 per cent in April […]

Trump Ethical Storm: 7 Environmental Appointees With Conflicts Of Interest

Back when Donald Trump was a real estate developer whose projects involved thousands of construction workers, he repeatedly downplayed well-documented dangers of asbestos, writing in one of his books that the carcinogen was “100-percent safe, when applied.” It helps explain President Trump’s pattern, amid ever-swirling ethical scandals, of selecting people with conflicts of interest for key environmental positions. These are appointments that will undermine the health of American families. His latest consideration, according to The New York Times: Replacing experts on a federal science advisory board “with representatives from industries whose pollution the agency is supposed to regulate” – again raising the issue of his administration’s serious conflicts of interest when it comes to enforcing clean air and water laws […]

We Have Two Options: Stabilize The Arctic Or Destabilize Our Planet

As the Arctic Council convenes in Fairbanks, it is a good time to remind ourselves that, unlike Las Vegas, what happens in the Arctic does not stay in the Arctic. The Arctic – its sea ice, terrestrial ice sheets, glaciers and permafrost – has significant influence on the planet’s weather patterns. Ocean currents, sea levels and rainfall patterns are all affected by what’s happening in the Arctic. All life on Earth has adapted for millions of years with a relatively stable Artic. That’s no longer the case. Today our generation is presiding over the dismantling of the Arctic and its stabilizing systems just when we need them the most […]
