Astronomers Investigating Curious Interstellar Rock for Signs of Extraterrestrial Technology

An elite group of astronomers announced Monday they will be utilizing the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia to scan a newly discovered oblong interstellar object for radio signals, The Atlantic reports. The object, dubbed ‘Oumuamua by scientists, first crossed the University of Hawaii’s radar in October and has has attracted significant astronomical interest due to its unusual shape for space debris. Russian billionaire Yuri Milner, the founder of Breakthrough Listen, a $100 million research initiative to find evidence of life beyond Earth, is leading the project. ‘Oumuamua is barreling by Jupiter’s orbit next year before heading toward Pluto. Lee.Credit Allison Wrabel/The Daily Progress, via Associated PressCarrying torches and chanting angrily, demonstrators marched Saturday in a Virginia city against a vote to remove a statue of Robert E. Lee, leading the city’s mayor to compare the rally to a gathering of the Ku Klux Klan. The gathering of several dozen protesters in Charlottesville, Va., was led by Richard B. Spencer, a prominent white supremacist, who posted pictures and video from the gathering to social media that showed a phalanx of demonstrators holding Confederate battle flags and a banner proclaiming, “We will not be replaced.” Their chants, some of which were captured on video, included “Russia is our friend” and the Nazi-era slogan “blood and soil.”According to local news reports, the protesters gathered in Lee Park, which is named for the general, shortly after 9 p.m. and were dispersed by the police after about 10 minutes.Charlottesville’s mayor, Mike Signer, condemned the gathering in a statement, saying, “Such intolerance is not welcome here.”Newsletter Sign UpContinue reading the main storyGet the Morning Briefing by EmailWhat you need to know to start your day, delivered to your inbox Monday through Friday.Thank you for subscribing. An error has occurred. Hero, Villain, TV Sensation: Spicer’s Fame Spread Beyond Washington

With Mr. Spicer in charge, the question of whether a briefing would be on camera or off — once an idiosyncratic concern of Washington insiders — turned into dinner table conversation around the country. On some days, soap operas were pre-empted to carry the White House news briefing live. Even the tabloid outlet TMZ got into the act, posting a grainy video of Mr. Spicer being ambushed by a critic at an Apple store.Mr. Spicer’s relationship with reporters was often strained, starting with his first appearance at the lectern, when he laced into the press corps, falsely accusing it of underestimating the size of Mr. Trump’s inaugural crowd. Though he chafed when reporters challenged him, sometimes for the benefit of a president he knew was watching, he often welcomed them to his office for gossip and, on occasion, soft-serve ice cream.Comedians could hardly believe their luck.“There’s a fount of material; it’s insatiable,” said Matt Negrin, whose obsessive Twitter chronicling of Mr. Spicer helped him land a job at “The Daily Show,” where he produced videos that captured Mr. […]

DOJ Forces Hobby Lobby To Return Artifacts Taken From Iraq

The United States filed a civil complaint Wednesday calling on Hobby Lobby to forfeit thousands of ancient Iraqi artifacts that were smuggled into the United States through dealers in Israel and the United Arab Emirates and shipped to its stores here beginning in 2009 labelled as “ceramics” and “samples.” The company has agreed to return return 5,500 artifacts and pay $3 million to resolve the civil action. Hobby Lobby did not attempt to verify the legal custodian or origin of the 5,513 of the artifacts at any point, according to the suit. The Green family, which owns Hobby Lobby, had been under federal investigation for possible illicit importation since 2011, as first reported in The Daily Beast. The company is famous for winning a landmark Supreme Court case in which they argued companies should not be required to provide contraception for employees under the Affordable Care Act if it does not align with their religious beliefs. Al Franken had to explain the scientific method to Rick Perry.

The nation’s largest privately owned coal company, Murray Energy, just filed a lawsuit against the Last Week Tonight host over the show’s recent segment. Oliver had criticized the company’s CEO, Robert Murray, for acting carelessly toward miners’ safety.

Murray Energy’s complaint stated that the segment was a “meticulously planned attempt to assassinate the character and reputation” of Murray by broadcasting “false, injurious, and defamatory comments.”

Oliver shouldn’t be too concerned, according to Ken White, a First Amendment litigator at Los Angeles firm, who told the Daily Beast that the complaint was “frivolous and vexatious.”

The lawsuit is hardly a shocking development. Before the show aired, Oliver received a cease-and-desist letter from the company. He noted that Murray has a history of filing defamation suits against news outlets (most recently, the New York Times).

Oliver said in the episode, “I know that you are probably going to sue me, but you know what, I stand by everything I said.”
