For Many Public Housing Residents, It’s Cold Inside, Too

Friday dawned clear and sunny, but the Weather Service forecast more cold for the weekend, with wind chills plunging to 10 to 15 degrees below zero in New York City on Friday night.Jasmine Blake, a spokeswoman for the housing agency, said the problems with heat dated to last weekend, when cold temperatures settled in and additional employees were assigned to round-the-clock duty. The snowstorm complicated repair efforts that were already underway, including, she said, in 32 buildings “where we know we have the most chronic issues.” From 6 a.m. to midnight in those places, she said, someone was assigned to do “constant monitoring” for problems with heat. The agency said that on average, heat was restored within five hours of a breakdown. The city’s public advocate, Letitia James, said in an interview that her office had received calls about the lack of heat from public housing developments across the city. She said the problems affected vulnerable residents, as in the case of a family at Drew Hamilton Houses in Harlem dealing with no heat and a baby with a fever of 101 degrees.“We need the boilers replaced, period,” Ms. James said, adding that reductions in federal money for public housing had begun long ago. Trump Again Lashes Out at Comey’s Handling of Clinton Investigation

PhotoPresident Trump arrived on the South Lawn of the White House on Wednesday. Mr. Trump complained on Twitter of “a rigged system,” returning to his grudge against James B. Comey.Credit Al Drago for The New York TimesWASHINGTON — President Trump on Friday lashed out anew at the F.B.I. director he fired in May, charging that James B. Comey had “exonerated” Hillary Clinton before fully completing the investigation into her use of a private email server. In an early morning tweet that appeared to seize on a statement from two members of the Senate Judiciary Committee about Mr. Comey’s handling of the inquiry, Mr. Trump complained of “a rigged system,” returning to his grudge against the former F.B.I. chief. While the president had initially cited Mr […]

For Murdoch Empire, Perhaps a Decisive Point in Relationship to Trump

But Mr. Murdoch is not just any chief executive, and the company he runs, especially its cable news network, has enormous influence over the country’s politics and media.Rupert Murdoch, 86, who has long pursued power rather than a specific ideology, has served as an informal adviser to Mr. Trump and repeatedly urged him to fire Stephen K. Bannon, the chief strategist and nationalist who exited the White House on Friday. At the same time, the Murdoch family controls both News Corporation, the owner of The Journal and The Post, as well as 21st Century Fox, home to a sprawling collection of movie studios and television networks. While there have been some cracks in the conservative wall, with the newspapers publishing more commentary critical of Mr. Trump, Fox News is known as Mr. Trump’s preferred outlet. That creates an uneasy balance for James Murdoch, 44, who is known to lean more toward the center than his father, but rarely expresses political views publicly. A fiscal conservative, James and his progressive-minded wife, Kathryn, have long advocated for the environment and expressed embarrassment by certain elements of Fox News, associates have said […]

Trump Says He Did Not Tape Comey Conversations

The timing of the announcement — after an internal debate in which Mr. Trump was at first reluctant to come clean quickly — seemed calculated to change the subject. Hours earlier, Senate Republicans released their heath care bill, which drew immediate opposition from four Republican senators and fanned fresh doubts about the president’s legislative agenda.Continue reading the main story“With all of the recently reported electronic surveillance, intercepts, unmasking and illegal leaking of information,” Mr. Trump said in a pair of tweets posted around 1 p.m., he has no idea “whether there are ‘tapes’ or recordings of my conversations with James Comey, but I did not make, and do not have, any such recordings.”That left open the possibility that the conversations were taped without his knowledge, even by the F.B.I. or intelligence agencies, which eavesdrop and intercept calls […]
