Manufacturing Is a Bright Spot in a Subdued Jobs Report

Dennis Slagle, Mack’s president, said his company’s hiring reflected increased demand for its big trucks. “We’ve seen confidence rise,” he said, noting that truckers benefit whether shoppers do their buying online or at brick-and-mortar stores. “If you bought it, we brought it.” Auto sales were down slightly in August, continuing 2017’s soft trend, but employment at vehicle and parts factories, which includes truck makers like Mack, managed to climb by 14,000 last month […]

More than 3 million American workers and counting now earn a living in the clean energy sector […]

A Trump Budget Would Hurt Americans’ Access To Our Public Lands

President Trump’s first budget completely disregards our environment and the public lands which millions of American families use for recreation. If enacted by Congress, these cuts and program eliminations would wreak havoc on our outdoor economy and the millions of jobs it supports in local communities, and will undermine towns and cities working now to create a clean and healthy future. The President has declared these programs ‘unnecessary.’ We could not disagree more. There is absolutely no economic justification for pulling the rug out from ongoing collaborative local, state and federal efforts aimed at supporting parks, trails and other outdoor recreation needs, all of which sustain a burgeoning $646 billion economy that supports 6.1 million American jobs. Local leaders and communities are on their own as they work for a safe, healthy future for the families who live there. For example, by gutting funds for land protection through the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF), America’s most effective conservation program, the Trump plan will harm our national parks. A good example of how LWCF helps came just this week, when we transferred 42 acres of land inside Rocky Mountain National Park to the park. […]

Environment, Jobs, and President-Elect Trump

While many people around the world are concerned about President-elect Trump’s threat to withdraw from the Paris climate accord, I am far more concerned about the possible signal to American corporations and jurisdictions that enforcement of our air, water, and toxic rules would be relaxed under EPA’s new administrator. Take a trip to India or China if you want to breathe the air of a deregulated economy. China’s airports may look pretty and their trains may run fast, but their air and water are dangerous to breathe or drink. America has a culture of environmental protection that took us decades to build. I believe it is permanent, but it may be tested during the next four years. Just as the states had to sue George W. Bush to have greenhouse gases defined as an air pollutant under the Clean Air Act, we may see additional state actions to force the federal government to uphold environmental law. It is possible that the attack on environment will be limited to climate and energy. According to the Trump transition team’s press release announcing the nomination of Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt as EPA Administrator: “For too long, the Environmental Protection Agency has spent taxpayer dollars on an out-of-control anti-energy agenda that has destroyed millions of jobs, while also undermining our incredible farmers and many other businesses and industries at every turn. As my EPA Administrator, Scott Pruitt, the highly respected Attorney General from the state of Oklahoma, will reverse this trend and restore the EPA’s essential mission of keeping our air and our water clean and safe,” said President-elect Donald Trump […]
