Trump Declines to Release List of His Visitors at Mar-a-Lago

Federal law exempts the White House from the Freedom of Information Act, or FOIA, which requires public disclosure of government documents. But CREW and its partners argued that because the presidential visitor records are typically maintained by the Secret Service — which is part of the Department of Homeland Security — they should not be exempt from public release. In July Judge Katherine Polk Failla of Federal District Court in Manhattan ordered the Trump administration to release the “records of presidential visitors at Mar-a-Lago” by September. But the Department of Justice, in a statement it sent to CREW, said it had decided not to release the names of everyone visiting with the president at Mar-a-Lago.“The remaining records that the Secret Service has processed in response to the Mar-a-Lago request contain, reflect, or otherwise relate to the president’s schedules,” Chad A. Readler, acting assistant attorney general, wrote in response to CREW in a letter dated Tuesday, but delivered on Friday. “The government believes that presidential schedule information is not subject to FOIA.”Newsletter Sign UpContinue reading the main storyThank you for subscribing. An error has occurred. The Obama administration had faced a similar lawsuit before it decided in late 2009 to start to make visitor logs public, a practice that stopped with Mr. Trump’s arrival.“After waiting months for a response to our request for comprehensive visitor logs from the president’s multiple visits to Mar-a-Lago and having the government ask for a last minute extension, today we received 22 names from the Japanese prime minister’s visit to Mar-a-Lago and nothing else,” Mr. Bookbinder said in a statement […]

As White Nationalist in Charlottesville Fired, Police ‘Never Moved’

Officials have insisted that no “stand down” order was issued, and a state police spokeswoman said troopers did not hear the shot. But many people suspect the inaction was deliberate, because just a month earlier, the police were heavily criticized for responding harshly at a Ku Klux Klan rally where anti-Klan protesters were sprayed with tear gas and arrested. On the day of the “Unite the Right” rally, Aug. 12, only eight arrests were made, even with 125 local officers, hundreds of National Guard troops, the state police and neighboring police agencies present. Those arrested included James A. Fields, the driver who has been charged with murder in the death of Heather D. Heyer.Investigators are also close to making arrests in the case of DeAndre Harris, 20, a local teacher’s aide and African-American who was beaten with a metal pipe and slabs of wood in a parking garage just a few yards from Police Headquarters, the city manager, Maurice Jones, said. The police chief and mayor declined requests to be interviewed.Mr. Jones said the police had developed two “tactical mobile force contingency plans” that were to be used as “quick responders” to skirmishes and fights that were popping up throughout downtown. The officers were instructed to “respond to fights directly” and to make arrests in teams and squads, he said.“We saw plenty of video of officers stepping in to de-escalate situations,” Mr. Jones said.He stressed that the city had tried to prevent the rally, but that a federal judge had ordered the city to grant the permit. But even a member of the City Council asked the city manager and the police chief why there was an “apparent unwillingness of officers to directly intervene during overt assaults.”The city did not use a number of security measures recommended by the state police, said Brian Moran, Virginia’s secretary of public safety and homeland security, including a ban on weapons and sticks of all kinds. In Monument Debate, Calls for an Overdue Reckoning on Race and Southern Identity

Starting in the early 2010s, a growing number of young, openly white nationalist Southerners began joining Southern nationalist organizations, primarily the Alabama-based League of the South. Mr. Griffin, an Auburn University graduate who had become radicalized by books and in online forums that had little to do with the Confederacy, was among them. These men dismissed those making a racially friendly case for the Confederacy — “rainbow confederates,” as Mr. Griffin disparagingly calls them — in favor of an unapologetic embrace of the South’s white supremacist past. “Let’s be frank,” said Matthew Heimbach, a former member of the League of the South who went on to co-found the white nationalist Traditionalist Worker Party. Martin Shkreli Is Found Guilty of Fraud

He never seemed to take his case seriously, meeting with federal authorities without a lawyer, making faces during testimony, calling the prosecution “junior varsity” and reading a book during final statements.Jurors convicted Mr. Shkreli of three of the eight counts: securities fraud in connection with his hedge fund MSMB Capital; securities fraud in connection with MSMB Healthcare; and conspiracy to commit securities fraud related to the Retrophin stock scheme, in which he tried to quietly control a huge portion of Retrophin stock. He was acquitted of counts one and two, conspiracy to commit securities fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud regarding MSMB Capital; counts four and five, the same charges with MSMB Healthcare; and count seven, conspiracy to commit wire fraud with regard to defrauding Retrophin by using funds from it to pay MSMB investors.Count seven carried the most weight for sentencing, charging Mr. Shkreli with defrauding Retrophin by creating sham consulting agreements and unauthorized settlement agreements to pay back MSMB investors. It was associated with the biggest loss, which judges take into account when deciding sentences in fraud cases, said Benjamin Brafman, Mr. Shkreli’s lawyer. As Judge Kiyo A […]

The Cost of a Hot Economy in California: A Severe Housing Crisis

Now here in Sacramento, lawmakers are considering extraordinary legislation to, in effect, crack down on communities that have, in their view, systematically delayed or derailed housing construction proposals, often at the behest of local neighborhood groups. The bill was passed by the Senate last month and could be acted on as soon as this week.Continue reading the main story“The explosive costs of housing have spread like wildfire around the state,” said Scott Wiener, a Democratic senator from San Francisco who sponsored the bill. “This is no longer a coastal, elite housing problem […]

Ruling Threatens Hong Kong’s Independence From China

And when President Xi Jinping of China visited Hong Kong two weeks ago for the 20th anniversary of its return to Chinese sovereignty, he mixed reassurances about the city’s special status with an unmistakable warning not to test Beijing’s will.Continue reading the main storySince 1997, China’s economy has become less dependent on Hong Kong, while the territory’s prosperity has become more entangled with the mainland. As the political and economic power imbalance grows, and Hong Kong is drawn tighter into China’s orbit, Beijing’s leaders are less willing to offer Hong Kong the same degree of deference they once showed it.But through it all, people in Hong Kong have been comforted by the fact that the city has its own legal system — based on British common law, unlike China’s — that is proudly independent. That legal system remains robust, and it is one reason investment flows to Hong Kong […]
