As Other Republican Senators Bolt, Lindsey Graham Cozies Up to Trump

“I’m going to try to stay in a position where I can have input to the president,” Mr. Graham, 62, said in a lengthy interview. “I can help him where I can, and he will call me up and pick my brain. Now, if you’re a United States senator, that’s a good place to find yourself.”“He’s very popular in my state,” Mr […]

Kelly, in Defending Trump Call, Holds Up Military as an Elite Class

Although he has rarely spoken about his son’s death publicly, Mr. Kelly told reporters on Thursday what happened when his friend Gen. Joseph F. Dunford Jr., now the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff but in late 2010 was the assistant commandant of the Marine Corps, broke the news to Mr. Kelly of his son’s death.PhotoA mother and son mourning at Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day this year.Credit Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images“He said, ‘Kel, he was doing exactly what he wanted to do when he was killed,’” Mr. Kelly recalled. “He knew what he was getting into by joining that 1 percent. He knew what the possibilities were because we’re at war.”Mr. Kelly used General Dunford’s words to try to explain why Mr […]

Trump Returns to Texas, With Words of Encouragement and Triumph

The muddy ground of the Gulf Coast provided public relations terra firma for a president who has struggled to advance his policy priorities and whose approval ratings are mired in the mid-30-percent range. The optics-obsessed former reality television star, who often watched his televised appearances with the sound off, was acutely conscious of projecting an image of command and concern. “The cameras are blazing,” he noted during one of the many photo ops, when he went to a church to load boxes of supplies into vehicles. But the recovery is only just beginning, and many risks remain. On Saturday, The Associated Press reported that federal officials had yet to inspect highly toxic Superfund sites in the Houston area, several containing petrochemical residue, that were swamped and possibly leaking contaminants into surrounding areas. Many Houston streets remain four or more feet underwater after being pelted by 50 or more inches of rain over the past week […]

Stephen Bannon Out at the White House After Turbulent Run

Mr. Bannon’s many critics bore down after the violence in Charlottesville. Outraged over Mr. Trump’s insistence that “both sides” were to blame for the violence that erupted at a white nationalist rally, leaving one woman dead, human rights activists demanded that the president fire so-called nationalists working in the West Wing. That group of hard-right populists in the White House is led by Mr. Bannon. Here Are the Top Officials in the Trump White House Who Have LeftWith the departure of Stephen K. Bannon, President Trump’s chief strategist, at least eight top officials are no longer in the White House. On Tuesday at Trump Tower in New York, Mr […]

For Transgender Service Members, a Mix of Sadness, Anger and Fear

“People are fearful,” said Laila Ireland, who was an Army combat medic for 13 years before transitioning to a woman and becoming the membership director for Sparta, an L.G.B.T. military group with more than 500 active-duty members. “All morning I’ve been telling them, Continue to exceed the expectations, show what you are worth.”Her husband, Logan Ireland, an Air Force staff sergeant who is also transgender, could not be reached because he was in a combat leadership course, but said in a text message from the field, “I would love for my president to meet me,” adding that he would like to tell Mr. Trump about all the “honorably serving transgender military members that are fighting right now for their liberties and for their country.”There are an estimated 2,000 to 11,000 active-duty transgender service members, according to a 2016 RAND Corporation study commissioned by the Pentagon. Since the Obama administration lifted the ban on transgender people serving, public opinion has been mixed. A poll conducted by Rasmussen Reports in June found that 23 percent of those surveyed believed that having them serve openly was good for the military, 31 percent said it would have no impact and 38 percent said it would hurt. But enlisting transgender people and paying for their medical transition has become a political flash point, and there has been strong resistance. A monument to transgender veterans unveiled in June at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Illinois was almost immediately defaced by vandals.“I thought we were at a place of progress, and it feels like we’re taking 10 steps back,” said Umut Dursun, 35, a former Marine in Miami who transitioned from female to male after his service. He was sitting in a V.A […]
