New York Today: New York Today: Pressure Is On for the Yankees

Secret Service Post Moves From Trump Tower to a Trailer

PhotoThe Secret Service has had a presence in Trump Tower since late 2015.Credit Hiroko Masuike/The New York TimesWASHINGTON — The Secret Service has been forced to relocate its Trump Tower command center to a trailer outside the Midtown skyscraper after a lease agreement between the General Services Administration and the Trump Organization fell apart last month, two people with knowledge of the negotiations said on Thursday. The Secret Service has had a presence in Trump Tower since late 2015, when then-candidate Donald J. Trump became a front-runner in the race for the Republican presidential nomination. For much of that time, it ran its operations from space inside the building, just one floor below Mr. Trump’s triplex residence. The G.S.A., which arranges real estate transactions on behalf of federal agencies, had been in negotiations with the Trump Organization to formalize a lease of that space when the deal collapsed. The two parties had gone as far as drawing up a lease contract, the two people privy to the negotiations said. But representatives of the Trump Organization refused to sign it over objections to the inclusion of a clause in the contract, the contents of which were not immediately known. It also was not immediately clear why the Trump Organization objected to the clause.Amanda Miller, a spokeswoman for the Trump Organization, did not address that account. She merely said both parties had agreed the agency should look elsewhere. “After much consideration, it was mutually determined that it would be more cost effective and logistically practical for the Secret Service to lease space elsewhere,” she wrote in an email.Newsletter Sign UpContinue reading the main storyGet the Morning Briefing by EmailWhat you need to know to start your day, delivered to your inbox Monday through Friday.Thank you for subscribing. An error has occurred. What if Baywatch were … better?

A report on the employment practices of green groups finds that the sector, despite its socially progressive reputation, is still overwhelmingly the bastion of white men.

According to the study, released by Green 2.0, roughly 3 out of 10 people at environmental organizations are people of color, but at the senior staff level, the figure drops closer to 1 out of 10. And at all levels, from full-time employees to board members, men make up three-quarters or more of NGO staffs.

The new report, titled “Beyond Diversity: A Roadmap to Building an Inclusive Organization,” relied on more than 85 interviews of executives and HR reps and recruiters at environmental organizations.

Representatives of NGOs and foundations largely agreed on the benefits of having a more diverse workforce, from the added perspectives in addressing environmental problems to a deeper focus on environmental justice to allowing the movement to engage a wider audience.

The most worrisome finding is that fewer than 40 percent of environmental groups even had diversity plans in place to ensure they’re more inclusive. According to the report, “Research shows that diversity plans increases the odds of black men in management positions significantly.”

The U.S. Auto Industry Needs Fuel-Efficiency Gains To Remain Globally Competitive

Last month, President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order that directed his administration to bury its head in the sand when it comes to climate science and clean electricity. He tried to sell this plan as a way to increase energy independence. But when it comes to electricity, America is already essentially independent. It’s our transportation demands that require imports of five million barrels of oil per day, including three million from Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) nations. If President Trump wants to increase America’s energy independence, he needs to put fuel efficiency first. Instead, at the bidding of the auto industry, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Scott Pruitt announced that the EPA would withdraw its determination that the fuel economy emissions standards for the years 2022 through 2025 were economically feasible and technologically achievable for the auto industry. The experts from the EPA, the Department of Transportation and the California Air Resources Board (CARB) had spent years collecting data and conducting the analysis that Administrator Pruitt—after less than one month on the job—decided was inadequate […]
