Boy Playing With Stove Caused Bronx Fire That Killed 12

A Bronx fire that killed 12 people was caused by a 3-year-old boy playing with the burners on a stove, the authorities said on Friday.“It seems like a horrible, tragic accident,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said on WNYC radio. The blaze, which killed four children in the five-story building at 2363 Prospect Avenue in Belmont, was the city’s deadliest in more than a quarter-century. It made December the deadliest month for fires in New York City in a decade, said Daniel A. Nigro, the city fire commissioner. The boy playing with the stove in a first-floor apartment screamed when the fire began, sending his mother rushing into the kitchen as it filled with smoke and flames, Mr. Nigro said. She ran out of the apartment with the boy and a 2-year-old child, but left the door open, allowing fire to shoot out of the kitchen and into the stairwell, Mr. Nigro said.“Fire travels up,” Mr. Nigro said. “The stairway acted like a chimney.”The passageway filled with smoke and flames, blocking some people from running downstairs and killing others who tried. When firefighters arrived, about three minutes after the first 911 calls, as many as 20 people were scurrying down the fire escape, Mr […]

Daily Life in Jerusalem? ‘Difficult’ and ‘Intense’ for Arab and Jew

Suddenly a stampede: Three Israeli border police officers in riot helmets sprint by, chasing someone. A moment later the chase is ended. As the officers catch their breath, a woman curses them in Arabic; one of the officers returns the slur, adding, “Move along.”Continue reading the main storyBut strife does not exist only between Jews and Arabs in Jerusalem.Back on the light rail, Rina Pure, who grew up in Acre, on the Israeli coast, said she bought her apartment in the French Hill neighborhood of Jerusalem years ago, “but now half the people are religious,” and it was getting to be too much for her to stay. For Trump, an Embassy in Jerusalem Is a Political Decision, Not a Diplomatic One

In doing so, Mr. Trump invited opprobrium from foreign leaders, who said the move was reckless and self-defeating. He also acted against the counsel of Secretary of State Rex W. Tillerson and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, who worried about anti-American blowback, not least to diplomats and troops serving overseas.Mr. Trump conceded the provocative nature of his decision. But as he has before, whether in pulling the United States from the Paris climate accord or disavowing the Iran nuclear deal, the president on Wednesday seemed to relish playing a familiar role: the political insurgent, defying foreign policy orthodoxy on behalf of the people who elected him.“People are waking up to the fact that the president doesn’t see grays and doesn’t like pastels,” said Christopher Ruddy, a conservative news media executive and friend of Mr. Trump’s […]

Damp, Dark and Disarrayed, Florida Starts Coping With Irma’s Aftermath

Power to Baptist Health South Florida’s hospitals in Miami-Dade County was sporadic, and each time the main supply failed, some areas would fall dark for eight seconds before the backup systems kicked in, said Wayne Brackin, the hospital group’s chief operating officer.“We have had significant and continuous power outages in most of the facilities, so we’ve been running off generators most of the time,” Mr. Brackin said.Emergency officials were contacting nursing homes on Monday to see whether they needed additional fuel for their backup generators or were having mechanical problems. Some of the state’s assisted living facilities, which also house people who depend on electrical medical equipment, had no backup generators and said on Monday that they were completely without power.Overnight from Sunday to Monday, floodwaters rose around a single-story nursing home in Palatka, about 60 miles south of Jacksonville […]
