Trump’s Budget Will Harm The Planet And The Economy

The president’s proposed budget is the starting point of a long process of negotiation, but between the Tea Party in the House and the ideologues in the Executive Branch, the news is bound to remain grim. We now know that finding $50 billion in extra defense money is not easy without entitlement reform, and no one in Washington has the nerve to raise taxes or go near Social Security or Medicare. The result is an effort to shrink funding for university-based science research and the national labs run by the Department of Energy. Research on fundamental earth systems science is also cut as is funding for state environmental agencies and national environmental emergency response. These cuts are part of a world view that is seriously out of step with reality. Additional funding for the military can always be justified since the world is a dangerous place […]

A Soul-Sick, ‘Shock And Awe’ Budget

It was called, with typical Trumpian bombast, “America First: A Budget Blueprint to Make America Great Again.” It won’t make America great again. It reflects a hardness of the heart and a sickness of the spirit unworthy of the American people. Chances are the great leaders of this country’s history wouldn’t even recognize its vision of America. Trump’s Budget Director, former tea party Congressman Mick Mulvaney, described it as a “hard power budget.” It slashes spending on diplomacy and aid while jacking up the military’s already-overinflated coffers. But former president James Madison once said, “A standing military force, with an overgrown Executive will not long be safe companions to liberty.” This budget boosts spending on the largest military force in human history by $54 billion in a single year. “The core of my first budget blueprint is the rebuilding of our nation’s military without adding to our federal deficit,” Trump’s introduction reads. But the military hardly needs “rebuilding,” since Pentagon spending has consistently risen through times of war and peace. And if Trump were genuinely concerned about the federal deficit, he could raise taxes on the wealthy to pay for his military spending spree. He asks everyone else, including future generations, to sacrifice instead […]

Call It What It Is: Climate Cover-Up, Not Climate Denial

As our nation’s top official sworn into office to ensure, “national efforts to reduce environmental risk are based on the best available scientific information,” Pruitt’s statement on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” raises some troubling questions on his ability to carry out his agency’s mandate—or even provide a forthright characterization of his agency’s scientific work. “I think that measuring with precision human activity on the climate is something very challenging to do and there’s tremendous disagreement about the degree of impact,” Pruitt said on CNBC, “so no, I would not agree that it’s a primary contributor to the global warming that we see.” Tremendous disagreement about the degree of impact of human activity on the climate?
