Federal Judge Urges Trump Administration to Push Back DACA Deadline

Judge Garaufis’ statement was not a court order, but it was a potent hint of his position toward the decision to rescind DACA, a matter that arrived in his court last week when immigration lawyers filed a federal complaint saying that ending the program was an “arbitrary, capricious” move “based upon animus toward Latinos.” The complaint, which revived a prior lawsuit filed in support of DACA last year, was the first legal assault on the program’s repeal. A day after it was filed, a group of 16 Democratic state attorneys general submitted a similar suit opposing the rollback, which has also ended up in front of Judge Garaufis. At the hearing, Judge Garaufis, who was appointed by President Bill Clinton, said that “the ultimate outcome of this case should not be heard by a court of law — it should be handled by the political branches.” But he sternly warned that if Mr. Trump and Congress were unable to reach a solution, he might be compelled to “protect” the 800,000 young immigrants who stand to be affected.Newsletter Sign UpContinue reading the main storyThank you for subscribing. An error has occurred. • Best of late-night TV. Sean Spicer, the former White House press secretary, joined Jimmy Kimmel for an interview. • Quotation of the day. “Is it that she did not show the appropriate degree of horror in herself, by applying?” — Alison Frank Johnson, a director of graduate studies at Harvard, criticizing a decision to overturn the admission of Michelle Jones. Back Story This week in 1974, The Times took notice of a new trend: video games. At a lunch spot in Manhattan, a reporter found two women trying out a tennis game on “a cross between an oscilloscope and a black-and-white television.” They seemed less than impressed, but The Times reported that “thousands” of other Americans were already hooked on “the space age pinball machine.” Photo Ralph Baer, considered by many to be the father of video games, with one of his creations in 1977. Harrowing Storms May Move Climate Debate, if Not G.O.P. Leaders

“We can get a fair amount of bipartisanship if we talk about severe weather and resiliency,” Mr. Schatz said. “For some people, it’s just about the phrase ‘climate change’ being too politically loaded.”Most movement among Republicans has come from moderates and lawmakers from areas vulnerable to flooding, where seeming oblivious to extreme weather could be politically risky. There have been no notable cracks in Republican opposition to climate policy among party leaders, or even within the powerful Texas congressional delegation — a group battered by Hurricane Harvey but fiercely protective of the state’s oil economy. For the most part, senior Republicans have avoided directly discussing climate in the aftermath of Harvey and Hurricane Irma, which pounded the Southeast this week. They have focused chiefly on scrambling to get government aid to stricken states. The Environmental Protection Agency administrator, Scott Pruitt, said debating climate now would be “very, very insensitive.”PhotoFlooding in a suburb of Beaumont, Tex., in the wake of Hurricane Harvey.Credit Christopher Lee for The New York TimesBut in Florida, where Irma left more than a dozen dead and millions without electricity, a handful of Republicans have been more outspoken. The Republican mayor of Miami, Tomás Regalado, urged Mr […]
