Tax Law Offers a Carrot to Gig Workers. But It May Have Costs.

The provision may also turn out to be a boon for employers who are trying to reduce their payroll costs. Workers hired as contractors, who tend to be cheaper, may be less likely to complain about their status under the new tax law.“Firms currently have a lot of incentives to turn workers into independent contractors,” said Lawrence Katz, a labor economist at Harvard. “This reinforces the current trends.”But it could lead to an erosion of the protections that have long been a cornerstone of full-time work.Formal employment, after all, provides more than just income. Unlike independent contractors, employees have access to unemployment insurance if they lose their jobs and workers’ compensation if they are injured at work. They are protected by workplace anti-discrimination laws and have a federally backed right to form a union. Those protections do not generally apply to contractors. Nor do minimum-wage and overtime laws.“What you’re losing is the safety nets for those workers,” said Catherine Ruckelshaus of the National Employment Law Project, an advocacy group.Traditional full-time jobs also insulate workers against the peaks and troughs in the demand for their services. Consider, for instance, the erratic income of retail or fulfillment-center workers hired in the fall and let go after the holidays.PhotoWorkers like janitors were once typically on the payrolls of large companies, enabling their wages to rise with those of other employees if the business did well. Now, such work is increasingly done by contractors.Credit Lucy Nicholson/ReutersAnd because companies have internal pay scales, the lowest-paid employees tend to make more than they would on the open market.Continue reading the main story“It used to be that companies like G.M […]

How Big Tech Is Going After Your Health Care

In the first 11 months of this year, 10 of the largest tech companies in the United States were involved in health care equity deals worth $2.7 billion, up from just $277 million for all of 2012, according to data from CB Insights, a research firm that tracks venture capital and start-ups.Each tech company is taking its own approach, betting that its core business strengths could ultimately improve people’s health — or at least make health care more efficient. Apple, for example, has focused on its consumer products, Microsoft on online storage and analytics services, and Alphabet, Google’s parent company, on data.“The big-picture reason that a lot of these tech companies are getting into health care now is because the market is too big, too important and much too personal to their users for them to ignore,” said John Prendergass, associate director of health care investment at Ben Franklin Technology Partners, a nonprofit organization in Philadelphia.Physicians and researchers caution that it is too soon to tell whether novel continuous-monitoring tools, like apps for watches and smartphones, will help reduce disease and prolong lives — or just send more people to doctors for unnecessary tests.“There’s no shortage of hype,” said Dr. Eric Topol, a digital medicine expert who directs the Scripps Translational Science Institute in San Diego. Russian billionaire Yuri Milner, the founder of Breakthrough Listen, a $100 million research initiative to find evidence of life beyond Earth, is leading the project. ‘Oumuamua is barreling by Jupiter’s orbit next year before heading toward Pluto. Turkey’s Alevis, a Muslim Minority, Fear a Policy of Denying Their Existence

Wary of Sunni dominance of public life, Alevis are key stakeholders in the secular Turkish state, and yet have suffered under staunchly secular governments, too. They exemplify the parts of Turkey that feel most threatened by Mr. Erdogan — secularists and minorities like the Kurds and Alevis — while highlighting both the authoritarianism and religious nationalism that predated him, as well as the disparate nature of the coalition that opposes him.“Secularists talk about Erdogan as an Islamist, whereas Alevis often look at him as explicitly Sunni,” said Howard Eissenstat, a Turkey expert at St. Lawrence University and nonresident senior fellow at the Project on Middle East Democracy, a think tank in Washington.Under Mr. Erdogan, Mr […]
