Astronomers Investigating Curious Interstellar Rock for Signs of Extraterrestrial Technology

An elite group of astronomers announced Monday they will be utilizing the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia to scan a newly discovered oblong interstellar object for radio signals, The Atlantic reports. The object, dubbed ‘Oumuamua by scientists, first crossed the University of Hawaii’s radar in October and has has attracted significant astronomical interest due to its unusual shape for space debris. Russian billionaire Yuri Milner, the founder of Breakthrough Listen, a $100 million research initiative to find evidence of life beyond Earth, is leading the project. ‘Oumuamua is barreling by Jupiter’s orbit next year before heading toward Pluto. Hopes Dim for Congressional Russia Inquiries as Parties Clash

Nine months into the Trump administration, any notion that Capitol Hill would provide a comprehensive, authoritative and bipartisan accounting of the extraordinary efforts of a hostile power to disrupt American democracy appears to be dwindling.PhotoRepresentative Devin Nunes, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, was forced to step aside from leading the panel’s Russia investigation.Credit Gabriella Demczuk for The New York Times“Congressional investigations unfortunately are usually overtly political investigations, where it is to one side’s advantage to drag things out,” said Mr. Gowdy, who made his name in Congress as a fearsome investigator of Democrats. He added, “The notion that one side is playing the part of defense attorney and that the other side is just these white hat defenders of the truth is laughable.”Instead, he said, he is looking to Robert S. Mueller III, the special counsel, to conduct an apolitical investigation.None of the challenges have thus far stopped the committees. And given the closed-door nature of their work, prominent new avenues of inquiry could always emerge, such as Russia’s use of social media to sow chaos and discord, capable of influencing the public discourse. But all three are up against a ticking clock, with Republicans in both chambers eager to wrap up the investigations before too long.Particularly in the House, partisan fighting is likely to undermine whatever conclusions the committee reaches […]

Harrowing Storms May Move Climate Debate, if Not G.O.P. Leaders

“We can get a fair amount of bipartisanship if we talk about severe weather and resiliency,” Mr. Schatz said. “For some people, it’s just about the phrase ‘climate change’ being too politically loaded.”Most movement among Republicans has come from moderates and lawmakers from areas vulnerable to flooding, where seeming oblivious to extreme weather could be politically risky. There have been no notable cracks in Republican opposition to climate policy among party leaders, or even within the powerful Texas congressional delegation — a group battered by Hurricane Harvey but fiercely protective of the state’s oil economy. For the most part, senior Republicans have avoided directly discussing climate in the aftermath of Harvey and Hurricane Irma, which pounded the Southeast this week. They have focused chiefly on scrambling to get government aid to stricken states. The Environmental Protection Agency administrator, Scott Pruitt, said debating climate now would be “very, very insensitive.”PhotoFlooding in a suburb of Beaumont, Tex., in the wake of Hurricane Harvey.Credit Christopher Lee for The New York TimesBut in Florida, where Irma left more than a dozen dead and millions without electricity, a handful of Republicans have been more outspoken. The Republican mayor of Miami, Tomás Regalado, urged Mr […]

Democrats Search for a Response After Charlottesville Violence

“I totally understand the passion of those who want to bring those statues down, but Democrats cannot lose focus on the overriding issue of midterm elections, which is building the middle class back up,” said Steve Israel, a recently retired House Democrat who chaired the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. “The midterm elections need to be a referendum on whether President Trump has delivered to a middle class that has been pummeled.”Jess O’Connell, the chief executive of the Democratic National Committee, disagreed and said the party must “operate on all levels.”“If we learned anything over the past few months, we know that silence is not an option,” she said. “We have to hold Republicans accountable, not just President Trump, but Republicans who remain silent.”Democratic leaders argue that all of their efforts are consistent with the twin goals of civil rights and economic rights, while they work to hold Mr. Trump accountable for saying that there were “some very fine people on both sides” of the unrest in Virginia.Ms. O’Connell said that the Democratic Party must stand against the Confederate statues and focus on the problems that face voters daily, like health care and jobs. The Rise and Organize campaign has rallied Democrats to knock on doors and call people to encourage them to participate in electoral politics.Newsletter Sign UpContinue reading the main storyThank you for subscribing. An error has occurred. They’re asking us about the economy and about how to raise wages,” Ms. O’Connell said. “And those are the things that we are working on as well.”But so vague is the slogan #RiseAndOrganize that supporters of Robert James Ritchie, better known as Kid Rock, are using it on Twitter to rally conservatives around the Michigan Republican’s possible Senate campaign […]

A Deal Breaker for Trump’s Supporters? Nope. Not This Time, Either.

It’s an indication of what now seems an almost immutable law of the Trump presidency. There are signs that Mr. Trump’s support among Republican leaders and some Republican voters is weakening. But in an increasingly tribal America, with people on the left and the right getting information from different sources and seeing the same facts in different ways, it reflects the way Mr. Trump has become in many ways both symbol and chief agitator of a divided nation.Moral outrage at Mr. Trump’s response to Charlottesville continues to glow white hot, but it has a largely partisan tinge. From Ms. Hicks’s perspective, the president simply pointed out a fact: Leftists bore some responsibility for the violence, too. Of course, Nazis and white supremacists are bad, she said. […]

Steve Bannon, Back on the Outside, Prepares His Enemies List

“The president was buoyed to election by capturing the hearts and minds of a populist, nationalist movement,” Alex Marlow, Breitbart’s editor in chief, said Friday evening. “A lot of it was anti-Wall Street, anti-corporatist, anti-establishment. And now we’re seeing that a lot of these guys remaining inside the White House are exactly the opposite of what we told you you were going to get.”Mr. Bannon’s long enemies list will include anyone he deems hostile to the nationalist, conservative agenda that he viewed himself as the guardian of in the White House. And his most personal causes will involve some the biggest fights that lie ahead between President Trump and Congress.VideoBannon Ousted: Inside His Controversial TenureStephen K. After Backing Alt-Right in Charlottesville, A.C.L.U. Wrestles With Its Role

“I won’t be a fig leaf for Nazis,” a member of the A.C.L.U. of Virginia board, Waldo Jaquith, posted on Twitter, announcing that he was resigning from the organization. Among his parting messages to the organization was, “Don’t defend Nazis to allow them to kill people.”This year has been a banner one for the civil liberties group, which is expected by some on the left to serve as a legal bulwark against some of the Trump administration’s policies. Indeed, the A.C.L.U. helped secure the first court ruling against the travel ban.Membership in the group has almost quadrupled, and donations online have reached $83 million since the election, when, in a typical period, about $5 million or less might be expected, a spokeswoman for the A.C.L.U., Stacy Sullivan, said. But the group’s defense of the Charlottesville rally has crystallized a recurring challenge for the organization: how to pursue its First Amendment advocacy, even for hate-based groups, without alienating its supporters.Newsletter Sign UpContinue reading the main storySign Up for the Race/Related NewsletterJoin a deep and provocative exploration of race with a diverse group of New York Times journalists.Thank you for subscribing. An error has occurred.
